New Year - Fresh Start

Castle College

Now that the festive season has finished many people are turning their minds to what they want to achieve in the New Year.  A great place to start locally is Lews Castle College. The next series of courses starts at the college at the end of this month. “These courses are offered in response to demand from the local community and are designed to help people improve their job prospects and develop their interests. “said Iain Macmillan the new Acting Principal at Lews Castle College “Our priority is to open up opportunities for the community to make the best possible use of the facilities and courses available locally through the college. We offer a wide range of courses which range from “hobby” courses in the evenings to part-time and online courses - leading to qualifications which will help to improve people’s job prospects.Wherever possible we aim to make this provision available flexibly at times that suit our community.” he added.

Course for you!

Lews Castle College has always offered a wide range of Evening Classes at this time of year but this year they will also offer a wider range of part-time courses which can be anything from half-day courses to degree units. “Our prime objective - with our part time provision - is to assist people who are currently unemployed, or are unable to commit to full-time study to gain certificates and qualifications which will improve their job prospects and the skills base of our Isles “said Mr Macmillan.

Many of the courses are free to people who are registered unemployed or may be discounted for people who have signed up for an ILA.

Individual Learning Accounts [ILA’s] are part of a government sponsored scheme to encourage people to improve their skills and job prospects through reducing the cost of training. If you would like to find out more about ILA’s and/or register for one please contact 0808-100-1090.

Opportunities for Community groups Through Energy Storage (OCTES)

OCTES is a new European Union project with the aim of helping people living in remote communities to save money on their energy bills by encouraging them to use their electricity intelligently.  To help inform people living in remote communities of the current price of electricity, we at OCTES are undertaking a trial study by installing “SMART” meters in people’s houses which will continuously display the current price of electricity at that time.
