Locally delivered classes at Barra Learning Centre.

Maritime Skills Course


This is a part-time local learning opportunity.  The learning centre would like to hear from anyone in the Barra community interested in studying Maritime Skills - Skills for Work, starting August 2011.

The course requires attendance at the Learning Centre for 3 hours per week and involves the study of 5 units, designed to give an introduction to the maritime sector, all at Intermediate 2 level: 

  • Seamanship: An Introduction
  • Health & Safety in the Maritime Sector
  • Maritime Environment
  • Small Boat Engineering
  • Employability Skills and Careers in the Maritime Sector

European Computer Driving Licence

Course Leaflet

Monday evening 4 - 6 pm

The ECDL is a certificate that verifies practical competence with computer skills in either a professional or personal capacity. It is an internationally recognised performance benchmark expected of employees and suitable for all computer users. The ECDL is a unique qualification, regularly updated with testing quality assured by The British Computer Society (BCS).

The ECDL covers the following modules:

  • Basic Concepts of Information and Computing Technology
  • Using the Computer and Managing Files
  • Word Processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Database
  • Presentation
  • Information and Communication

 

Higher Mental Health Care

Course Leaflet

This course can be achieved in one year or over two years.  It consists of two modules plus a project.

The course is for anyone interested in mental health and individuals who in the future might be interested in careers in nursing, social work, childcare and health.  The course is also very worthwhile for anyone with a general interest in the subject area.  It follows the syllabus set by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, the two modules being: Caring for People with Dementia & Understanding Mental Health and Mental Illness.

Higher Early Education & Childcare

Course Leaflet

This course is achieved over one year.

The course is for anyone who may in the future, or is currently interested, in working with children whether in nurseries or primary schools, or who would be interested in careers in nursing, social work, childcare and health.  It follows the syllabus set by the Scottish Qualifications Authority, the three modules being: Child Development: Birth to 12 years, Developmental Theory in Early Education and Childcare & Holistic Approaches to Child Health.

Higher English

Course leaflet

SQA English Higher is a pre-requisit course suitable for anyone wishing to obtain an English qualification to future their careers or enter Higher Education.  This course requires you to have obtained Intermediate 2 English or Standard Grade English at credit level.

Higher Maths

Course Leaflet

Recommended Entry is Standard Grade at Credit award or Intermediate 2 Maths or equivalent.  Weekly classroom attendance at the Barra Learning Centre.

Intermediate 2 Maths

Course Leaflet

Recommended entry is Standard Grade at General award or Intermediate 1 Maths or equivalent. Mature students may apply to start, at the discretion of the College, without the normally required entry qualification. Weekly classroom attendance at the Barra Learning Centre.

Day Skipper

Course Leaflet

This is an elementary course in seamanship, navigation and meteorology.  It is intended as an integral part of the overall training for the Competent Crew and Day Skipper/Watch Leader and as an introductory course to the more advanced Coastal Skipper course.

Coastal Skipper

The course involves Navigation, Meteorology, Collision Avoidance, Safety and Passage Planning.  This exciting new course is for anyone that has achieved their RYA Day Skipper certificate or has the equivalent  knowledge or practical experience.

 

Ulpan

Start to speak the Gaelic language with this fun and popular course.  Summer school 11th - 14th July 2011.  Come along and join in with an intensive Gaelic Learning experience!  New enrolments for weekly Ulpan classes will commence September 2011.

 

EqualSkills

Equalskills is a basic IT programme for everyone. It has been developed to help everyone become involved in the 'digital age', even those with little or no computer skills.

Description

Equalskills is designed to teach basic skills necessary to communicate using the Internet and email. It is a fun and informal introduction to computers and their uses and a good first step towards gaining ECDL.
It has been developed to help everyone become involved in the 'digital age', even those with little or no computer skills.  It is a comprehensive learning programme that covers 4 modules.  The Equal Skills programme is certified by the British Computer Society.  Includes: Computer Basics, Introduction to the Desktop; The World Wide Web and Electronic Mail.
Cost: £50.00  ILA funding available.
