Fosglan - Gaelic Translation Service
The Cultural Services Agency was established in February 1995 by Lews Castle College as part of its policy for the development of the Gaelic language and culture.

The use of Gaelic in education, public life, the media and the arts has expanded greatly, giving rise to a constant demand for the Gaelic translation, editorial and advisory services.

fosglan offers high quality work, speed, reliability and confidentiality. The Agency also applies consistent standards in terms of grammar, terminology and orthography.

The staff involved in the quality control aspects of the Agency have a proven track record in Gaelic and are experienced in translation work.

It is hoped that this project will be an initial step towards setting up national standards for Gaelic.
luchd-obrach aig astar ~ teleworkers

Teleworkers, working from home or from telecottages, using the latest technology to receive and send text, undertake some of the work. This work is then checked for accuracy and quality by the editors prior to being delivered to the customer.
OBAIR ~ PRODUCTS
- Eadar-theangachadh ~ Translation
- The translation of text, in hard copy or disk format, from English to Gaelic or vice versa. This can be in a variety of forms eg letters, books, reports, scripts.
- Obair-eagrachaidh ~ Editing
- Reviewing previously translated/original Gaelic work, and editing for grammar, terminology and orthography.
- Obair-leasachaidh ~ Adaptation
- Adapting work (translated or original) to a format as requested by the customers for their needs.
- Comhairle ~ Advisory Service
- Advice on the development of eg bilingual policies, place names, grammar, terminology, orthography or any other relevant Gaelic topic.
- Rannsachadh ~ Research
- Research may take a variety of forms eg historical information, terminology, learners requirements.
- Obair Stòr-dàta ~ Database Creation/Conversion
- Creation/conversion of software for use in Gaelic environments.
- Eadar-theangachadh Maraon ~ Simultaneous translation
- Provision of this service in situations where oration/debate is through the medium of Gaelic
- Eadar-theangachadh/Sgrìobhadh Lèir-chlaistinneach ~ Audio Translation/Transcription
- Translating/transcribing existing/new audio works into Gaelic eg speeches, lectures, dictated works, songs (audio tape, records, video etc)
- Obair Chruthachail ~ Creative work
- Where the customer may require a theme to be developed into an article, book, tape (audio/visual) etc
- Voice-overs
- Dubbing (or sub titles) of existing audio-visual material
- Trèanadh ~ Training
- Various aspects of the work involved
