Equality Act 2010 (Statutory Duties) (Scotland) Regulations 2011
Lews Castle College is committed to implementing the Equality Act 2010, in force from 6th April 2011. From this date, our separate equality schemes relating to disability, gender and race will no longer be in force.
As a designated public authority we are required to show due regard to the elimination of discrimination, the advancement of equality of opportunity and the fostering of good relations (the “general duty”) on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex, and sexual orientation.. The protected characteristic of marriage and civil partnership is covered by the elimination of discrimination duty only.
We are committed to preparing and publishing equality outcomes for all protected characteristics approved by the Scottish government.
We will take all reasonable steps to involve persons with relevant protected characteristics; we will consider relevant evidence related to persons with protected characteristics.
We will publish our first set of outcomes no later that 6th April 2012, to a schedule to be approved by the college’s Board of Management.
Within each period of four years, beginning with the date of publication of our equality outcomes, we will:
- a) Review progress towards achieving these outcomes;
- b) Publish equality outcomes that comply with the criteria above.
Until such time as the specific duties are agreed by the Scottish Government, we will comply with the general duty under the 2010 Equality Act, and strive to ensure equality in all we do.
As we develop our Single Equality Framework over the coming months, we will continue to work with the commitments made under the separate schemes for disability, gender and race, which are included here, though no longer separately published.
