Student Administration & Support

This section contains information on how the College manages the administration and progression of their students from admission to course completion, including student support services.

Admissions The College's admissions procedures and policies

To obtain a hard copy of the Lews Castle College prospectus telephone 01851 770000 or call at reception in Stornoway, Benbecula or Castlebay. Individual course leaflets are also available from these locations, detailing procedures for application and admission, and course entry requirements.

Widening participation is actively encouraged by the College through the additional accessibility provided by the Centres in Benbecula, Barra, and the UHI network.
Fees and charges Tuition fees and other charges to students Fees for full time undergraduate level courses are paid direct to the College by SAAS for eligible students. See UHI Model Scheme for details. Fees for non-advanced full time courses are paid direct to the College by SFC, for eligible students. Full details of fees and charges for full time and part time courses are available from Mrs Sandra McCall. at 01851 770245.
Registration The College's arrangements for registering students Registration and enrolment is usually carried out as part of the student induction process. Details are issued to all students on acceptance to their course.

Learning support services Description and availability of the academic and non-academic learning support services offered by the College. Further Education – Learning Development and support services, and personal development advice are provided by Course Tutors and Student Advisers. For students with additional support for learning needs advice can be obtained from Student Services.
Student liaison The structure and functioning meetings of staff/student consultative committees or other liaison groups. The College has a policy of encouraging student membership of a number of major committees. The Student Union Executive is elected by all students, and the Student President is the Student Representative on the Board of Management.
Student welfare A description of the availability and range of the College's welfare and advice services. Details of these are provided in the Student Handbook, issued to all students on enrolment. Further information is available from Student Services Staff – Ms Christine Mackinnon.
Chaplaincy services A description of the College's chaplaincy services. Details of the College’s chaplaincy services are provided in the Student Handbook, issued to all students on enrolment.
Health services A description of the medical support services provided by the College for students. Details of these services are provided in the Student Handbook, issued to all students on enrolment.
Careers services Availability, conditions of use and range of services offered by the college’s careers service Initial advice is provided by Student Services staff. The College refers students to the local office of Careers Scotland for  detailed careers advice.
Sports and recreational facilities Availability, conditions of use and range of sporting and recreational facilities offered by the College

The College has no dedicated sports or recreational facilities, but Stornoway Sports Centre provides a range of activities which are available to students as well as to the general public. The Stornoway Golf Club is within the Lews Castle grounds and an all weather football pitch and running track are within walking distance of the College.

Student accommodation Availability, conditions of use and range of accommodation services offered by the College

Self catering student accommodation is available at the Bayhead Bridge Centre, which is located within easy walking distance of the College. Current weekly cost is £80 per week. Enquiries relating to accommodation should be addressed to: The Manager, The Bridge Centre, Bayhead Street, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, HS1 2DY, Tel 01851 705808.

Requests for information on arrangements for letting this accommodation during College holidays should be referred to the above.

Graduation arrangements Information about awards ceremonies

The Graduation Date for 2009 is  Friday 21 August 2009. Full details will be sent to graduands closer to the actual date.

Student complaints Procedures for dealing with student complaints about the College

Details of these are included in the Student Handbook and the UHI Student Charter.

Relationship with the Students Union/ Association The legal and structural basis of the College's relationships with the Students Union/Association Amendments to the Students’ Union Constitution require the approval of the Board of Management. The President of the Union is the students’ representative on the Board. No funding is provided by the College for the Students’ Union, but facilities for administration of Union funds are provided, and all cheques drawn on the Student Union account require the signatures of one member of the Student Union Executive and the College’s Director of Finance and Corporate Services.
