Referencing

It is important, in ensuring that everyone reading your work can understand your citations and references, that you are consistent and that you follow a standard procedure which is generally recognised.

UHI Style of Referencing

Referencing is an integral and essential part of writing at university level, and it is important that it is treated as such from the start of your reading for an essay or assignment. Leaving it to the end will waste precious time, and may mean that your bibliography, or the citations in your text, are missing or incorrect.

Poor referencing may be penalised by tutors and examiners, so it is vital to know how to do it properly.

University of the Highlands & Islands has approved a referencing system for undergraduate and taught post-graduate students based on the standard Harvard style. Further information, including an interactive reference tutorial, quick guides in both Gaelic and English, and links to the referencing software tool Refworks can be found here.

Lews Castle College Library staff have written some basic notes on referencing concepts to get you started.
