Description
Students will gain fluency in Gaelic and will explore the historical and contemporary links between the Highlands and Islands and the North Atlantic Rim. Course content include Gaelic language, history, economics and politics.
The BA in Gaelic
and Development offers students the opportunity to gain fluency in Gaelic
and is the first degree in Scotland (with the BA Gaelic
Language and Culture) to be delivered entirely through the medium of Gaelic.
Gaelic
coaching will be given as required in Level 1. The course offers students the
opportunity to participate in a dynamic initiative aimed at exploring links
between the Highlands and Islands, the North Atlantic rim and the wider
European Union, the factors and events which have shaped the region, and the
current issues, concerns and developments which are now influencing policies
and development strategies. Areas of
study include sustainable development, cultural renewal and minority language
regeneration.
Level 1 prioritises the acquisition of language skills through two parallel
courses: An Cùrsa Comais for learners of Gaelic; and Gàidhlig & Conaltradh
for semi- fluent speakers. Applicants with exceptionally high standards of both
written and spoken Gaelic may be considered for Accreditation of Prior
Learning/Accreditation of Prior Experiential learning, exempting them from all
or part of Level 1.
Level 2 of the course is a common year preparing students to choose between
studying for either the BA Gaelic and Development or BA Gaelic
Language and Culture at the next level.
Level 3 students specialise in the study of Gaelic and Development.
Course Code: UQ505
Progression
