Description
This course will provide the theoretical knowledge required to enhance professional skills in caring for and educating patients who have diabetes mellitus, their families and friends. The module is part of the Specialist Strand of study (SCQF level 9) within the BA Health Studies programme offered by UHI. The module tutors are diabetes practitioners from the Diabetes Centre at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
The Complicated Diabetes Management module covers:
- in-depth examination of micro-vascular and macro-vascular complications associated with diabetes mellitus;
- in-depth review of pharmaco-therapies used in diabetes mellitus, e.g. oral hypoglycaemic agents, insulin, anti-hypertensive agents, lipid lowering agents and others;
- in-depth examination of lifestyle issues and psycho-social aspects of diabetes mellitus, e.g. acceptance, non-compliance, young people and pregnancy;
- in-depth review of the who, what, when and where of specialist services and other agencies involved in the care of the diabetic patient.
