Description
This module will provide the theoretical knowledge required to enhance professional skills in caring for and educating patients who have diabetes mellitus, their families and friends. The module is part of the Specialist Strand of study (SCQF level 9) within the BA Health Studies programme offered by UHI. The module tutors are diabetes practitioners from the Diabetes Centre at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
The Diabetes Management module provides an overview of:
- current thinking and research in relation to the diagnosis, screening, assessment and treatment of diabetes mellitus;
- micro-vascular and macro-vascular complications associated with diabetes mellitus;
- lifestyle issues including behavioural changes, e.g. acceptance;
- pharmaco-therapies of diabetes mellitus, e.g. oral hypoglycaemic agents;
- the multi-disciplinary team and the pathway of care for the diabetic patient.
