Entry Requirements
Students wishing to pursue this course should have attained one of the following:
- Standard Grade at credit level in any relevant subject.
- Communication at Intermediate 2 or credit at standard grade.
- A course or units in Care Intermediate 2 level.
Duration and Mode
This course is delivered by blended learning. Students will be supported by online learning and VCs. The course is part-time, from September to June for 4 hours weekly.
Description
Anyone who is interested in mental health, and also individuals who in the future might be interested in careers in nursing, social work, childcare and health will find this relevant. It might also interest future students of psychology, sociology and the social sciences. The higher consists of two modules and a project which is externally assessed.

- Types, causes and progress of dementia.
- Strategies and skills required to meet the needs of people with dementia.
- Assisting carers to cope with the stresses associated with caring for people with dementia

- Meaning of Mental health and Mental Illness
- Programmes of mental health
- The effects of mental illness on human behaviour
- How the rights of individuals are maintained by current legislation
- Skills and attributes necessary for and effective mental health care worker.
