Description

Year one of the BSc (Hons) degree programme with exit opportunity with CertHE.  Subjects will include Global Environmental Issues, Introduction to Sustainable Rural Development, Principles of Ecology, Introduction to Social Policy, Social Geography of the Highlands and Islands.

The BSc (Hons) Sustainable Rural Development has been designed by a UHI team in consultation with industry to meet the needs of rural communities now and in the future.  Key themes incorporated within the programme and its modules are sustainability issues and actions in response to climate change in the rural context.

Implementing sustainability in the rural context is a necessity and so learning about sustainability and options for adopting its principles will be an area of growth as public efforts continue to raise awareness amongst the wider population.  These aims provide the guiding rationale for this programme of study.

This course is delivered online within a virtual learning environment (VLE), with course materials augmented by tutorials, seminars and group activities as appropriate.  Thanks to the flexibility of the course, students are able to study online and manage their work/family commitments.  Evening tutorials are offered and the online learning environment enables the course to be progressed from home and/or your nearest UHI learning centre.
