Description
Candidates must complete 6 mandatory units, and 1 of 3 optional units to achieve the award. The choice of optional unit will depend upon the area in which the candidate wishes to specialise. The choices are:
Impervious (vinyl);
Textile (carpets, etc.);
Timber (wood or laminate).
The title of the award will therefore vary depending upon the area of specialisation:
SVQ 2 Floor Covering Operations (Impervious Floorcovering)
OR
SVQ 2 Floor Covering Operations (Textile Floorcovering)
OR
SVQ 2 Floor Covering Operations (Timber Floorcovering)
CANDIDATES WHO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE ALL 9 UNITS, I.E. 6 MANDATORY AND ALL 3 OPTIONAL UNITS, WILL BE AWARDED ALL 3 SVQs - INDICATING COMPETENCE IN ALL THREE AREAS.
There are two routes by which candidates can achieve this award:
Route 1 - NEW ENTRANT
Candidates must be employed as an apprentice floorlayer by a company involved in the installation of impervious, textile or wood floorcoverings. The company can specialise in one, two or all of the above and using the options available within the SVQ can fulfill the specific aspect of training their employees require. Candidates will attend college on a Block Release basis, but the majority of assessment will be done on site.
Route 2 - EXPERIENCED WORKER
This route is available to candidates who have been employed as a floorlayer for several years but hold no formal qualifications which would give them national recognition for the skills they already have.
A skills matching exercise would be undertaken, recording the candidates' skills, knowledge and expertise, against the SVQ units. The candidate would then, under guidance from the assessor, construct a portfolio of evidence to achieve these units.
Where candidates are unable to generate sufficient evidence to meet the requirements of the units, some planning would be required in order to provide the candidate with the opportunity to demonstrate competence in these areas. All these arrangements would be agreed by everyone involved and written up into an assessment plan for the candidate. All assessment will be done on-site.
CANDIDATES MAY ALSO TAKE A HEALTH AND SAFETY TEST WHICH, ALONG WITH SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF SVQ 2 FLOOR COVERING, WILL ENABLE THEM TO ACQUIRE THE CSCS (CONSTRUCTION SKILLS CERTIFICATION SCHEME) WORKERS OPERATIVE CARD. POSSESSION OF A CSCS CARD IS NOW MANDATORY FOR MANY COMMERCIAL CONTRACTS.
