NQ Access to Merchant Navy
The UK shipping industry relies on recruiting highly motivated young people to operate and manage the wide range of ship types that trade on a world-wide basis. The purpose of this new training programme is to prepare young people for a career at sea by providing them with the necessary basic skills and qualifications required by ship operators in the UK.
SVQ Marine Vessel Operations (Skipper - Fishing Inshore) Level 3
An appropriate qualification for the skipper of a small fishing vessel (under 16 metres) operating in or near coastal waters where there is no statutory requirement for Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) certification.
SVQ Marine Vessel Support Deck (MN) Level 2
This qualification is aimed primarily at new entrants to the Merchant Navy who wish to become ABs. It also provides existing deck ratings with an opportunity to obtain a qualification.
SVQ Marine Vessel Support (Deckhand - Seafish) Level 2
In the fishing industry the VQ system is the means by which fishermen will be able to progress from competent Deckhand to Skipper of a fishing vessel. This qualification recognises skills at work and the ability to do a job competently. A typical job role would include keeping a wheelhouse watch, shooting and hauling fishing gear, operating deck machinery, repairing fishing gear and care of the catch.
GMDSS: Global Maritime Distress and Safety System - Short Range Certificate
The holder of this certificate is authorised to operate a VHF DSC and VHF- only radio telephone station established in a ship under a licence issued by the Secretary of State.
Boatmaster's Licence
This is a 5-day course and covers those skills needed to attempt the Boatmaster's Licence. Topics covered will include: Basic First Aid at Sea, Basic Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention at Sea, Basic Sea Survival Boat Handling, Meteorology, Pilotage - Basic Navigation and International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.
Firefighting at Sea
This is a pre requisite course for persons seeking employment in the Fishing and Aquaculture Industries or shorebased occupations.
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR) - (STCW)
This course is a pre requisite for entry to the Merchant Navy. A certificate is issued by the college on the successful completion of the course on behalf of the Maritime Coastal Agency.
Basic Navigation and Safety
This course is the perfect introduction or refresher for anyone going afloat on inshore waters, and a stepping stone to the more in-depth Day Skipper shorebased course.
RYA Powerboat - Advanced Level
This is a progression from Level 2, introducing pilotage, using both traditional and electronic navigational and boat handling techniques for planing boats on coastal waters by day and by night.
RYA Powerboat - Intermediate Level
This is a progression from Level 2, introducing pilotage, using both traditional and electronic navigational and boat handling techniques for planing boats on coastal waters by day.
RYA Powerboat - Level 1
Introduction to boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment. Background theory.
RYA Powerboat - Level 2
Course includes launching, mooring, anchoring and recovery plus all the boat driving skills required for basic competence in powerboat.
RYA Coastal Skipper - Shorebased Course
An advanced course in navigation and meteorology for candidates for the Coastal Skipper Certificate. The syllabus makes some provision for revision of subjects in the elementary course but those who have not acquired the knowledge set out in the elementary course are unlikely to be able to assimilate all the subjects covered in the advanced course in the time available.
Efficient Deck Hand (EDH)

RYA Day Skipper - Shorebased Course
This is an elementary course in seamanship, navigation and meteorology. It is intended as an integral part of the overall training for the Competent Crew and Day Skipper/Watch Leader and as an introductory course to the more advanced Coastal Skipper course.
Port Operatives Course
This four day course is designed to promote a programme of training based on the National Occupational Standards for Port Operation or Supervision of Port Operations. It is delivered in conjunction with training provider and consultants Port Skills and Safety Ltd (PSS).
Elementary First Aid (STCW)
The course is delivered by an approved certificated instructor and complies with the Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) and Sea Fish Industry Authority (SEAFISH) requirements for the issue of their certificates.
Personal Survival Techniques (PST) - (STCW Table A V1/11)
This course is a pre requisite for entry to the Merchant Navy. A certificate is issued by the college on the successful completion of the course on behalf of the Maritime Coastal Agency.
RYA Radar Certificate Course
For operators of small craft (Motor and Sailing vessels including fishing boats).
