Austrian Student in Uist wins Gaelic Prize

Romana Brunner, a student at Lews Castle College Benbecula, is getting the chance to spend a week at one of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig's fabulous short-courses this summer. She has recently been declared the winner for this year's Most Improved Gaelic prize.

Ms Brunner, a music teacher and Highland bagpiper from Austria, is a student on the FE Course in Traditional Music and Gaelic at Lews Castle College Benbecula.   She is a natural linguist, with five languages under her belt, as well as being a talented musician.   She's been studying in Uist for the last eight months, with instrumental lessons from the renowned piper Iain MacDonald of Glen Uig.  She had this to say about the prize, "I'm really delighted to be given the chance to work on my Gaelic in an intensive way before going home.  I'm not sure how I will be able to keep up the language once I'm back, but it will be forever useful for even just figuring out the meaning of a lot of the tunes that I play.  I've never been to Sabhal Mòr or Sleat before and I'm really looking forward to it".
Course leader Dr Will Lamb said, "Romana is a brilliant language learner and put in a lot of time and effort this year with her Gaelic work, amongst everything else.  This prize is a brilliant opportunity for our students, and we are very thankful to Sabhal Mòr for putting it on."
