New Course - NQ Introduction to Land Based Skills
This course is designed to meet the needs of young people wishing to gain employment in the Construction and Landscaping industries. The course has been designed to be as practical as possible.
The course follows five different elements; in the Horticultural element we will grow plants from seeds and cuttings, landcape an area of ground, learn about planting and plant after-care and also look at the maintenance required for grassed areas.
The Estate Maintenance
element covers the tasks that are required to maintain the various
services and structures that are found on all Estates, we will be
looking at fencing and drainage, and also have a brief look at plumbing
and electrical maintenance.
The Construction
element covers everything from making paths, using slabs and paving
blocks, to building walls. Students will learn how to interpret
drawings, prepare sub bases, handle materials and then lay a basic path
and build short lengths of half brick walls. We will also cover
practical joinery skills.
In the Land Based Industry part of this course we will look at local land and water based industries and find out what it takes to operate these
businesses in a rural community. We will also find out what skills are
required to gain employment in this sector.
The Core Skills
element covers Communication and Numeracy and looks at the skills that
are required for efficient teamwork. We will also be finding out about
the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace and taking part in
some basic First Aid procedures.
