John Macbeth

Design of a hybrid wind/solar thermal storage system used to provide the thermal requirements of the Hebridean Domestic Sector.

Supervisors:

  • Dr Neil Finlayson
  • John Currie
  • Prof. Frank Rennie
  • Dr. Mohamed Imbabi

Rationale for the research

John is currently undertaking a PhD with Greenspace Research at Lews Castle College UHI.

His topic consists of designing a thermal storage system that has the ability to promote stratification when being powered by an intermittent electrical supply. Thus, allowing electrical energy from variable sources such as wind energy converters, to be used efficiently for the provision of space heating and domestic hot water. Mathematical representation of the system as well as empirical data gathered from measurements on a full scale 700 litre prototype have been undertaken as part of this project.
Prior to starting with Greenspace Research, John carried out an undergraduate degree (BEng Hons) in Energy and Environmental Engineering at Napier University and graduated in the summer of 2006.
