Retired in 2005 with over 10 years in industry and then 33 years as an academic member of staff at the Heriot Watt University.
Joined Heriot Watt University in 1971 as a lecturer and then progressed to senior lecturer, Director of Teaching, Deputy Head of Department and Director of the MSc Sustainable Process Management taught program.
Was Principal Investigator on over £250k EPSRC funded research projects; joint supervisor on a further~ £500k EPSRC/BBSRC research grants and over £750k confidential commercial contracts in the period 1980 – 2004.
Am a retired chartered member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers; the Institution of Industrial and Wastewater Management and affiliate of CIBSE. Was for seven years chairman of the Aquaculture Engineering subject group within the I. Chem.E.; first editor of Applied Sciences journal Aquacultural Engineering, and chairman of the first international conference on that subject in 1987.
Was appointed external examiner of Brewing Technology for 5 years within the UK’s Institute of Brewing responsible for the technology paper, part 2 of their Associate Membership examination. Served a three-year period as External Examiner for the Energy and Environment MSc program at Caledonian University.
Have jointly supervised numerous PhD and MPhil students; been personally responsible for four PhD and two MPhils; and been external examiner for six UK and three international PhDs.
Since 2000 have been an invited Erskine Fellow twice to the University of Canterbury, Christchurch New Zealand and still have ongoing teaching commitments in France at the Ecole des Mines, Nantes.
Have published over 25 papers, presented papers and chaired at several conferences and given a series of plenary lectures, seminars and CPE courses.
