Current Teaching and Research Interests

Teaching:

I am UHI module leader for:

  • Climate Change
  • Climate, Land and People
  • Quantitative Research and Data Analysis

I also teach the following modules:

  • Energy Efficiency in the Built Environment
  • Physics and Meteorology (for the Access to Merchant Navy course
  • An evening class "Understanding the Weather"


Research:

I currently contributing towards the following funded research projects:

  • SASKA ("Search for an Astronomical Site in Kenya")
  • OCTES ("Opportunities for Community groups Through Energy Storage"), which is a new European Union Framework 7 Northern Periphery Project, involving partners from Scotland, Northern Ireland, Finland and Iceland.
  • Director of Studies (Main supervisor for PhD student Mark Bradley)

  • Organising the Lews Castle College research seminar speaker series (2009-2010)
  • Third party monitoring for UHI students
  • Weekly "Cafe Scientifique" founder
  • Western Isles Tour Guide Association guide.

  • Talking and giving seminars
  • Nature & landscapes, natural history
  • Photography, including making time-lapse cloud animations
  • I have been observing the weather for over 30 years and have run a weather station for nearly as long - I write a weather and climate column for the Stornoway Gazette newspaper.
