What is special about this course?

This course will provide you with an introduction to the basic seamanship skills to take on a career at sea. Whether that is in the deep sea, fishing, aquaculture or windfarms sector.

Entry requirements

A strong interest in the Maritime sector and Level 3/4 core skills qualifications

  • The course will cover the required STCW short courses:

    Elementary First Aid

    Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities

    Personal Sea Survival


    The following Maritime based SQA Units:

    Efficient Deck Hand (College based Award)

    Maritime Environment: An Introduction

    Health And Safety In The Maritime Sector

    Safety And Survival At Sea

    First Aid At Sea

    Most full-time students will have their fees paid.

    Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

    What can I do on completion of my course?

    On completion of the course you will have the ability to start immediately on a career in the maritime sector or to continue your studies by enrolling onto the Access to Merchant Navy course offered at the college.
