Carpentry and Joinery SCQF Level 6

What is special about this course?

This is a 4-year apprenticeship that allows candidates to demonstrate competence in job-related skills in their area of work and expertise.  Studying within the structure of a Modern Apprenticeship, the course is a combination of work-based and college training. It provides the dual benefit of gaining a nationally recognised qualification while being paid as you work and is fully backed by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).

Entry requirements

This qualification is aimed at learners aged 16 and above who work or want to work in the construction industry and specialise in carpentry.  The qualification is aimed at people wishing to learn skills in carpentry and progress through an apprenticeship, working towards becoming a master craftsman.  You will work towards the PDA Carpentry & Joinery – SCQF Level 6 and also working towards completing the SVQ 3.

Subjects covered include: health and safety, Woodworking Power Tool Skills, Install Domestic Fitments, Door Construction, First Fixing, Ground and Upper Floor
Construction, Panelling, and Installation, Roof Construction, Repairs and Maintenance, Second Fixing, Timber Framed Construction and Internal Partitioning Systems, Woodworking Machine Skills, Workshop Practice, and Hand Skills and Window Construction.

How will I study my course?

    The candidate will undertake Personal Development Awards (PDA’s) in the college environment alongside a work-based portfolio to complete the SVQ.  Candidates will look to complete the course over a 4-year period attending college for blocks to complete the PDA which involves both practical and theory work with continual assessment. Candidates are required to gather evidence from the workplace to compile a portfolio to complete the SVQ throughout their apprenticeship. Upon successful completion of the portfolio, the final assessment (Practical Skills Test) will be carried out at Lews Castle College.

    Most full-time students will have their fees paid.

    Students on part-time courses may also be eligible to have their course fees waived.

    What can I do on completion of my course?

    Successful completion of SVQ Carpentry and Joinery (Construction) at SCQF Level 6, will also give you the opportunity to progress to an Advanced Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery which will further develop your hand skills and more specialised and traditional craft skills.

    Career opportunities

    Site Carpenters can have a varied career working on new builds, refurbishments, or in specialist areas.  After gaining work experience in the chosen occupational areas there are also opportunities to progress into occupational work supervision, the management, or technical support areas that compliment your new skills. Carpentry and joinery give candidates the opportunity to work anywhere in the world with their new skills.
