LCC UHI Staff to lead events at Faclan 2020

Faclan, The Hebridean Book Festival, launched today featuring two events hosted by LCC UHI staff.

This year, like everything else on the planet, Faclan: The Hebridean Book Festival has had to be rethought, rescheduled, retooled. It will still declare a presence though, albeit mostly online. In recognition of lockdown, quarantine, self-isolation and with a nod to the odd choreography of the times, the theme is Strictly Local: Writers, speakers and subject matter.

This year the festival will feature two events hosted by LCC UHI staff Frank Rennie and Catriona Murray.

Frank will launch his new book 'The Changing Outer Hebrides'. A fascinating and intimate account of the inter-relationship between one small island village in the Hebrides and the wider world. A journey of deep mapping from the formation of the bedrock 3 billion years ago, through the Iron Age and the Clearances to the contemporary events of community land ownership, it challenges the perception that this is a remote, isolated place. Rather that it is crucial to our contemporary relationship with the land. The book has already been listed for the Highland Book Awards.

Catriona Murray will be hosting the event, 'Strangely Familiar: The Otherworld in Lewis Life'. A journey through the veil that separates us from a dimension populated by ghosts, witches, fairies and other shadowy beings. Beliefs, customs and superstitions associated with the supernatural world of the Gaels and particular to the Isle of Lewis.

All events are free but booking is essential.
