Lews Castle College UHI Art Students Launch Open Studio

Degree Show dates: 22 May 2021 – 5 June 2021 Venue: Taigh Chearsabhagh Museum and Arts Centre Graduating Students: Maya Reid & Christopher Spears

“The landscape and culture of Uist is at the heart of the art school and ultimately one of the most fundamental influences on our students,” Rosie Blake LCC UHI Fine Art Course Leader explains.

Rosie has been teaching at the LCC UHI campus in Uist for 3 and a half years and explains how the unique student experience is such a huge part of the artistic process for students. “Our students come from all over the world to immerse themselves in the landscape of Uist. It is an experience like no other and the opportunity to explore your art in and practice in a truly unique way.”

The studios based at Taigh Chearsabhagh art center in Uist have been delivering Fine Art and Design courses for nearly 20 years and are one the few art schools in the UK that have been privileged enough to continue to provide students practical tuition and a physical degree show throughout the Covid pandemic.

Rosie continued, “Our students are aware just how lucky they are to be able to exhibit their work in a physical space when so many other students have had this taken from them by Covid. They have worked so hard to continue their work throughout the pandemic and this show is testament to this.”

Maya Reid

Maya has been studying at LCC since 2017 and has settled here with her family and a small army of pets! Her work uses a multi-disciplinary approach to reconnect with the Earth through sense and soul.

“I am heavily invested in process, often working outdoors with materials taken directly from the landscape.”

“The locations are amazing, you get a real personal connective experience with LCC. “It’s such an amazing place, we decided to live here, we bought a house here and we’ve fallen in love with the place”.

Christopher Spears

Chris has been living on Uist for 44 years. He decided to return to LCC to finish his art education (in his early 70s!). He has a background in theatre, community projects, and puppetry, and this interest in performance has fed into his creative practice.

His work embraces the chance and indeterminacy his work and includes performance and abstract shadow puppetry in his practice. Experimentation has led him to collage incorporating natural materials like sand, clay and soil, plant forms, as well as wood, metal and found objects, but always retaining a connection to painting.

“I think one of the best things about studying here is the studios and the space, and I’m into print and there is a really good print-making facility”. “I really like the proximity to the sea”.

The Degree Show exhibition will be opened to the public at Taigh Chearsabhagh’s Gallery May 22nd – June 5th. (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday 10 am – 4pm).

The students work will also be exhibited in a virtual Degree Show exhibition along with graduating art students from Orkney, Shetland and Moray. This virtual Degree Show is being hosted by Art North Projects, going live on June 11th at https://artnorth-magazine.com

Taisbeanadh Air-loidhne Ceuma Ealain UHI ann am com-pàirteachas le Art North: 11 Ògmhios - https://artnorth-magazine.com/uhi-degree-show

Thuirt Rosie Blake Stiùiriche Cùrsa Ealain Fhìnealta Colaisde a’ Chaisteil UHI, “Tha an cruth-tìre agus an cultar ann an Uibhist aig cridhe sgoil na h-ealain, agus is iad cuid de na nithean a tha a’ toirt a’ bhuaidh as motha air na h-oileanaich againn.”

Tha Rosie air a bhith a’ teagasg aig Colaisde a’ Chaisteil UHI ann an Uibhist a Tuath fad trì bliadhna gu leth, agus mhìnich i cho cudromach don phròiseas chruthachail is a tha an t-eòlas air leth a bhios na h-oileanaich a’ faighinn, “Bidh na h-oileanaich againn a’ tighinn à gach ceàrnaidh den t-saoghal gus iad fhèin a bhogadh ann an cultar Uibhist.  ’S e eòlas iongantach a th’ ann, is tha e a’ toirt cothrom dhaibh an ealain aca a sgrùdadh agus a chleachdadh ann an dòigh gu tur annasach.”

Thathar air a bhith a’ lìbhrigeadh chùsaichean Ealain agus Dealbhaidh anns na stiùideothan stèidhichte ann an Taigh Chearsabhagh ann an Uibhist a Tuath airson faisg air 20 bliadhna.  Bhathar fortanach gun d’ fhuaireadh air cumail a’ dol a’ toirt oideachadh pragtaigeadh seachad do na h-oileanaich tro mhòr-ghalar a’ Choronbhìorais, agus gun d’ fhuaireadh cuideachd air taisbeanadh ceuma a chur air dòigh air an làthraich.

Tha Rosie ag ràdh, “Tha fios aig na h-oileanaich againn gu bheil iad gu math fortanach cothrom a bhith aca an cuid obrach a thaisbeanadh air an làthraich, oir cha d’ fhuair oileanaich ann an àitichean eile an cothrom sin ri linn a’ chorobhìorais.  Tha iad air an t-uabhas obair a dhèanamh tron mhòr-ghalar, agus tha an taisbeanadh seo mar thoradh air an sin.”

Maya Reid

Tha Maya air a bhith na h-oileanach aig Colaisde a’ Chaisteil bho 2017, agus tha i fhèin sa teaghladh air an dachaigh a dhèanamh an seo, cuide ri mòran pheataichean!  Bidh i a’ cleachdadh dòigh-obrach ioma-dhiosaplaineach gus ceangal a thogail às ùr leis a’ Chruinne-cè tro fhaireachdainn agus anam.

“Bidh mi gu mòr a’ dol an sàs sa phròiseas, gu math tric bidh mi ag obair a-muigh le nithean a chaidh a thionail bhon àrainneachd.”

“Tha an t-àite mìorbhaileach, agus thèid dàimh phearsanta a thogail eadar thu agus Colaisde a’ Chaisteil.  Tha an t-àite cho mìorbhaileach is gun do roghnaich sinn fuireach an seo, cheannaich sinn taigh agus tha sinn air ar beò-ghlacadh leis an àite.”

Christopher Spears

Tha Chris air a bhith a’ fuireach ann an Uibhist fad 44 bliadhna.  Roghnaich e tilleadh do Cholaisde a’ Chaisteil gus crìoch a chur air an oideachadh ealain aige.  Bha e an sàs ann an tèatar, pròiseactan coimhearsnachd agus pupaidearachd.  Tha an ùidh seo ann an cleasachd air buaidh a thoirt air an obair cruthachail aige.  An dèidh diofar stoidhlichean fheuchainn, bidh e a’ cruthachadh dhealbhan measgaichte, a’ cleachdadh stuthan nàdarra leithid gainmheach, crèadh ’s ùir agus planntraisean, a bharrachd air fiodh, meatailt agus nithean a lorgar mu thimcheall – ach bidh e an-comhnaidh a’ cumail ceangal ri peantadh.

“Saoilidh mi gur e na stiùideothan agus an fharsaingeachd cuid de na rudan as fheàrr mu bhith nad oileanach an seo, a bharrachd air an sin tha ùidh agamsa ann am priont agus tha goireas priontaidh fìor mhath an seo.  Is fìor thoil leam cuideachd cho faisg is a tha sinn air a’ mhuir.”

Bidh an Taisbeanadh Ceuma fosgailte don phobal ann an Gallaraidh Thaigh Chearsabhaigh eadar Cèitean 22mh – Ògmhios 5mh (Diluain, Diciadain, Dihaoine, Disathairne 10m – 4f).
