Angela Louch

Hairdressing NC Level 5

I studied hairdressing for three years at Lews Castle College UHI and being a mature student and a single parent the support was amazing.

The course at the college taught me so much with regards to cutting and colouring hair and preparing me for work by having an open salon and learning about self-employment. We were very fortunate to have two days placement in hair salons/barbers which was a great opportunity to help build self-confidence but also to build relationships with salon owners and clients. After finishing my course I became self-employed and rent a chair in the salon where I did my placement. You never stop learning and things change frequently due to fashion and trends, therefore it is important to keep up to date with training.

During my three years at LCC UHI I was overwhelmed to win some awards. To receive the support and encouragement from my lecturer was great but to then win awards was something I never thought I would achieve. The awards I received were: ‘Most Employable Student of the Year’ (three years running), trophy for ‘Excellence in Volunteering’,  ‘Billy Macleod Inspirational Award’,  ‘Further Education Student of the Year’ (LCC) and ‘UHI Further Education Student of the Year Award’
