Based on the island of North Uist, our campus provides an opportunity to study Fine Art in the distinctive environment of the Outer Hebrides, on the west coast of Scotland.  Our students learn and work in our shore-side studios, and have immediate access to the wild environment of the Island.  Students frequently create their work and hold events and exhibitions outside in the landscape.  As well as the glorious, inspiring scenery, students have the opportunity to take advantage of the dedicated studio and learning space that is part of local arts centre, Taigh Chearsabhagh.

The art campus is located within the building of Taigh Chearsabhagh, an award-winning Museum and Contemporary Arts Centre.  The centre hosts a vibrant programme of exhibitions and events, and students have the opportunity to exhibit in the gallery spaces.

We have a top-quality print facility, complete with:

  • Rochat roller press
  • Etching and intaglio equipment
  • Relief printing facilities, including woodcut, collagraph and linocut
  • Monoprint
  • Chine collé

We have a fully equipped analogue darkroom for traditional and alternative photography, such as film processing and photographic printing.  Students will also be able to benefit from the high-resolution film scanner for hybrid analogue/digital working, and a large collection of photographic equipment including analogue cameras, lights and tripods.

Our studios consist of spacious, open-plan areas within which students are allocated a personal workstation, with wall space and plenty of natural light.  We have a store of hand and power tools for student use on request.  Students have full access to the studio’s library of art books and UHI e-library, as well as access to other electronic resources such as journals, papers and e-books.

Our studios are equipped with three desktop computers and several student laptops, which connect to our WIFI and LaserJet printer and scanner/photocopier.  All devices are installed with the latest Microsoft and Adobe CC software.  At our Benbecula campus, we have a suite of computers with Adobe Creative Cloud, available for students to book and use for digital-based classes.
